High summer from Super Morzine. What an absolute treat to have this gorgeous view as a commission to paint. The Rosebay Willowherb in full magnificent flower, with its fluffy white seed pods and all the bank alive with plants and stalks and weeds and buzzing and crawling with insects, all against a backdrop of the stunning mountainscape behind, drawing the eye forward and beyond as always. I love the layers of the scene- with the flowers in the foreground, the trees and valleys in the middle ground and the peaks behind.

 

I have painted this on a large canvas 100 x 120 in acrylics which allows the picture to capture a little of the feeling of the incredible majesty of this scene- only painting big seems to do it justice.  I like to use, as here, multiple layers of contrasting colours to build up depth and texture which allows me to bring out the relief and shadows of the rocks and the flora.
